[edit]It is said that the size of the brown/gold band of the woolly bear caterpillar is a folklore indicator of the severity of the coming winter. Not sure if this a "rural myth" or there are verifiable explanations for this belief? Does the length foretell the amount of snow or the overall length of the season? Thanks in advance to the learned future editor of this inquiry.
